The Ask Is Over. The Relationship Isn't.
The Ask Is Over. The Relationship Isn't.
You finally made the ask.
Maybe the donor said yes. Maybe they said no. Maybe they need time to think about it—or offered a different amount. Or maybe you're still waiting for a response.
Now what?
For many Executive Directors, the uncertainty that follows a major gift solicitation can be just as uncomfortable as making the ask.
But here's something I want you to remember: The donor's answer matters. But how you respond matters just as much.
This week on Huddle Up with Mark The Fund Coach, we're talking about what happens after the ask—and how to respond in ways that strengthen rather than undermine the relationship.
The ask may be over. But the relationship isn't.

The Fund Coach Tip of the Week
Don't let the donor's answer determine how you treat them.
Think about your most recent major gift solicitation. How did you respond?
If the donor said yes, did you discuss how they'd remain connected to the impact? If they said no, did you continue the relationship with the same care? If they needed time, did you establish a respectful next step? And if they offered a different amount, did you appreciate their generosity without making them feel that their offer was disappointing?
This week's challenge: Identify one donor who has already responded to an ask and consider what you can do to strengthen that relationship today—not because you're preparing for another gift, but because the relationship matters.
