What's Holding Your Nonprofit Back from Growing?
What's Holding Your Nonprofit Back from Growing?
What if one of the biggest barriers to your nonprofit's growth isn't the amount of money available—but the way your organization thinks about money?
I see this with nonprofit leaders all the time.
They have a compelling mission. They know the needs in their communities are growing. They want to serve more people and make a greater impact.
But when it's time to develop the budget, they start with what they raised last year.
And without realizing it, they allow their financial history to define their organization's future.
Your mission should inform your financial strategy—not be constrained by it.
That's one of the central ideas behind my podcast series, The Road to a Million.
We're exploring what it takes to grow a nonprofit toward a sustainable $1 million annual operating budget, including the mindset, leadership, relationships, and financial strategy required along the way.

I'm excited to introduce a brand-new, free resource!
The Organizational Money Mindset Assessment
In about three minutes, you'll discover how your organization currently approaches financial growth.
You'll receive a personalized email identifying one of four mindset profiles: Scarcity, Preservation, Emerging Growth, or Abundance Mindset.
You'll also receive three practical recommendations to help move your organization forward.
Here's what I'd encourage you to do: Complete the assessment yourself. Then invite your board chair and a few board members to complete it independently.
Compare your results. The conversation that follows may be even more valuable than the assessment itself.
The Fund Coach Tip of the Week
Ask a different question at your next budget meeting.
Instead of starting with: “What can we afford to do next year?”
Try asking: “What would it take to achieve the next level of impact our mission demands?”
Then work backward to identify the resources, relationships, and organizational capacity needed to get there.
This doesn't mean abandoning financial discipline. It means allowing your mission and vision to inform a responsible strategy for growth.
Because a sustainable budget isn't just about balancing the numbers. It's about building an organization capable of delivering on its promise.
Until next week, keep building relationships, thinking bigger, and leading boldly.
